This study aims to describe the characteristics of the osteonecrosis in OVFs and the efficacy of balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) for the osteonecrosis. This was a prospective study of 61 patients with the osteonecrosis in OVFs who underwent BKP. Their mean age was 68 years (55 to 90). All the patients received radiography, MRI and CT examination before BKP, and were performed a histological analysis of biopsies obtained from OVFs. Efficacy was assessed by changes in anterior vertebral body height, a visual analogue pain scale and the Oswestry Disability Index at one day preoperative, two days postoperative and final follow-up assessments. All the patients had back pain more than six weeks before surgery. The back pain had a certain feature that was distinctly proportional to activity and position. 54% of the osteonecrosis showed intervertebral clefts in radiography, 73% of the osteonecrosis showed intervertebral clefts in CT. 98% of the osteonecrosis showed a well-defined signal intensity in the location of the osteonecrosis on T2-weighted and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) in MRI. Histological examination revealed osteonecrosis in the 61 patients. Significant improvements in all efficacy measures were observed at the postoperative versus preoperative assessments; no significant differences were observed between the postoperative and final follow-up assessments. The osteonecrosis in OVFs can be diagnosed according to the pattern of back pain and the imaging characteristics, especially MRI. BKP is one of minimally invasive, safe and effective procedures for the disease.

Prone position in balloon kyphoplasty leads to no secondary vertebral compression fractures in osteoporotic spine – a MRI study

PURPOSE Vertebral compression fractures are the most common fractures in the elderly. Long lasting pain and deformity is responsible for consecutive impairment with markedly reduced life quality, increased morbidity and mortality. The beneficial effects of balloon kyphoplasty are verified in many studies. Subsequent fracture risk is not finally clarified, cement related risks and deformity rela...

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with an intravertebral cleft treated by percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty.

We investigated the safety and efficacy of treating osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with an intravertebral cleft by balloon kyphoplasty. Our study included 27 patients who were treated in this way. The mean follow-up was 38.2 months (24 to 54). The anterior and middle heights of the vertebral body and the kyphotic angle were measured on standing lateral radiographs before surgery, ...

A prospective comparative study of kyphoplasty using the Jack vertebral dilator and balloon kyphoplasty for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

This study prospectively compared the efficacy of kyphoplasty using a Jack vertebral dilator and balloon kyphoplasty to treat osteoporotic compression fractures between T10 and L5. Between 2004 and 2009, two groups of 55 patients each underwent vertebral dilator kyphoplasty and balloon kyphoplasty, respectively. Pain, function, the Cobb angle, and the anterior and middle height of the vertebral...

Unilateral versus bilateral balloon kyphoplasty in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

Bilateral and unilateral approaches are the main methods for balloon kyphoplasty. However, controversy exists about which leads to superior outcomes. The goal of this study was to compare the clinical effects and safety of unilateral vs bilateral balloon kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Five databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Chinese Bi...

Refracture of osteoporotic vertebral body after treatment by balloon kyphoplasty

RATIONALE Balloon kyphoplasty is a widely accepted treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) with good results and a low risk for complications. A refracture of previously treated vertebra is a relatively rare condition. PATIENT CONCERNS We reported our 3 cases and reviewed all relevant literatures of 11 cases with refracture of osteoporotic vertebral body after kyphop...
